Since the outbreak of the civil war in 2011, an estimated 12 million Syrians have fled their homes – that is half its population who have had to leave everything they had to survive. Over 6 million of those escaping the conflict have sought refuge in neighbouring countries with a similar number displaced within Syria. Now, in the eighth year of war, 13.5 million need humanitarian assistance within the country.
Among the worst humanitarian crises of recent times, it is often difficult to see the human faces beyond the cold statistics after such a long drawn conflict; parents, children – all who had hopes and dreams like the rest of us, who have lost family and friends to the conflict and been torn apart and left with nothing but nightmares and trauma.
