As Muslims, we are commanded to fast during the month of Ramadan. However, in certain instances, it is not possible for us to keep all of our fasts and therefore fidyah becomes necessary for us to perform.
Fidyah is a compensatory payment that must be given if one misses their fast due to a legitimate reason such as ill health, pregnancy or extreme age. It is prescribed in the Qur’an as recompense for each fast missed and should be paid out by those who can afford it. The amount of fidyah depends on the financial capability of each individual but will generally be around the same amount as what would have been spent on a meal when fasting. In 2023, the rate for fidyah is £5 per fast.
The importance of giving fidyah lies in its ability to help those less fortunate who may otherwise struggle to make up for the lost days of fasting. It also serves as an act of worship that demonstrates a person’s commitment and adherence to Islamic teachings. Furthermore, fidyah helps promote unity amongst Muslims, as it encourages them to look out for each other and share their blessings with those in need.
Ultimately, giving fidyah is an obligation that cannot be taken lightly and should be treated with reverence and respect. Through this act, we are reminded of our responsibility towards our fellow believers who are unable to observe their fasts properly due to circumstances beyond their control. May Allah reward us all with His mercy and acceptance for fulfilling our obligations towards Him and His creation!
